Mutualist Blog: Free Market Anti-Capitalism
To dissolve, submerge, and cause to disappear the political or governmental system in the economic system by reducing, simplifying, decentralizing and suppressing, one after another, all the wheels of this great machine, which is called the Government or the State. --Proudhon, General Idea of the Revolution

It always seems that the government/state tries to get the people it rules to support its interests (or the interests of the class which controls it) by making the people think they are somehow "united" under this elite institution and that the government "works" for them. I remember talking to a classmate a few months ago about this very issue. I asked him why people should be divided into states, and he replied by saying that the state "unites" the people it rules over. While our desires for community and togetherness are perfectly understandable, it's a complete joke to say that we are united by the state. We are much more united when we can freely associate without any kind of coercive force grouping us and dividing us.
